Heavy Duty Wallcoverings and their Advantages
Heavy duty wallcovering is fundamentally an interior decorating medium and, as such, competes with many materials such as wallpaper, paint, wood stone, tile, plastic laminates such as Formica etc.
Substitutes for wallpaper range from expensive mirrors, wood panelling and tiling, to easy-to-apply latax paints and include pictures, tapestries, draperies, and photo murals etc, which enhance wall surfaces.
Advantages of heavy duty wallcoverings are:
- Durability, resistance to abrasion, etc.
- Ease of maintenance
- Fire resistance
- Strength - hold poor wall surfaces together and cover cracks
- Ease of repair to damaged surfaces
- Affordable long-term economy
- Ease of installation
Today, more than ever before, there exists a strong market demand for interior finishes that offer the combined features of aesthetics, low maintenance and replacement costs.
The reason for this is clear: building owners can only justify todays high
cost of building commuction by considering their initial investment over the
intended life of the building. Therefore, the anticipated maintenance and
replacement costs of materials are of particular concern. The selection of
interior finishes should be of primary importance of their exposure
to wear and tear. If poor quality materials are used, upkeep costs can
escalate to an enormous amount of money over just a ten year period.
Another argument which strongly supports the specification of quality building materials is the high cost of construction. This is predominatly due to the excalating labour costs, and not necessarily materials, as the use of quality materials does not add significantly to overall costs. In other words, it costs approximatly the same to hang all wallcoverings whether or not they differ in their resistance to staining, abrasion, fading, tear strengths, and so forth.
If a poor quality wallcoverings are installed and later fail to perform, the owner has only three choices:
- Live with it
- Paint It - Painting over poor quality wallcoverings can be an expensive solution because, once painted, it will have to be repainted about every two years, thus escalating costs even more.
- Replacement - It is costly to replace poor quality heavy duty coverings with high quality heavy duty wallcoverings. Because it is not usually advisable to hang heavy duty coverings on top of existing heavy duty coverings, the owner will have to pay for the removal, prepare the surface, and repeat his initial investment for the installation of the new wallcovering.
The conclusion of all this is simply that in view of the high cost of labour, owners should allow in their construction budget, for the installation of quality wall coverings.
